Grit and Determination

A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.

With the way things are going for our beloved Filipina tennis sensation—and with a little luck—Alexandra ‘Alex’ Eala may soon barge into the world’s top 50.

From her recent performance, despite some losses, Eala has notched a new career-high ranking as she climbed to No. 54 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA)’s world ranking, following deep runs in a pair of WTA 125 events in China.

The 20-year-old lass from Quezon City rose two spots from her previous career high of No. 56, which she achieved in June after she reached her first WTA final in the prestigious Eastbourne Open in the United Kingdom.

Coming off her maiden WTA Challenger title in the Guadalajara Open in Mexico last September, Eala has been hard at work for the Asian swing, competing in three tournaments in a span of just two weeks.
Eala made the semifinals of the Jingshan Tennis Open, but closed her campaign when she lost in a three-set debacle to New Zealand’s Lulu Sun.

She then survived a pair of three-set matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the Suzhou Open, but once again she fell short of the final four after a three-set heartbreak loss against Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic last week.

Still, with no rest, Eala plunged back to action on Saturday, October 6, in the Wuhan Open, although playing a fifth straight match that went the distance seemed to have taken its toll on her as she failed to get past Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, in the qualifiers, missing out on the main draw.

But things aren’t bleak for our pride as moving forward from China, she will next compete in the Japan Open beginning on October 13.

We’re definitely expecting her to do her best and with grit and determination, she’ll be among the best in the world.

Felicidades, señorita . . .
