Globe tests 10Gbps Free Space Optics link across Laguna Lake

Globe achieves breakthrough Free Space Optics trial over Laguna Lake, proving high-speed wireless optical transport

Globe, together with its subsidiary Fiber Infrastructure and Network Services Inc. (FINSI) and Google X’s TAARA project, has successfully completed a pioneering field trial of Free Space Optics (FSO) technology—delivering 10Gbps wireless connectivity across an 11-kilometer aerial link over Laguna Lake, with 80% of the connection spanning open water.

The trial showcased how laser-based wireless transport can achieve fiber-like speeds without the need for physical cables, licensed spectrum, or traditional microwave systems. Using Google’s TAARA FSO link, Globe subjected the system to rigorous testing, including the Enhanced RFC2544 suite (throughput, latency, jitter, and frame loss) and a 24-hour Bit Error Rate Test. All metrics passed Globe’s technical requirements, validating the solution’s real-world reliability.

“This milestone represents a significant leap forward in our quest to deliver future-ready and cost-effective transport solutions that are rapidly deployable,” said Gerhard Tan, Senior Director and Head of Technology Strategy and Innovations at Globe. “It proves we can bring high-capacity connectivity to areas where building fiber is too costly or challenging.”

Google’s TAARA system uses precisely focused light beams to transmit multi-gigabit data, making it an ideal option for island provinces, rural areas, and other geographies where traditional infrastructure faces barriers. The Laguna Lake pilot confirmed the technology’s resilience and scalability, even in complex environments.

Xerxes Jonash Sta. Ana, General Manager of FINSI, emphasized the company’s role in enabling the deployment: “We are proud to help validate the TAARA system in the field. This is a groundbreaking step toward bringing transformative technologies to the Philippines, accelerating digital inclusion, and overcoming physical limitations in connectivity.”

Beyond its technical achievement, the initiative demonstrates how collaboration between Globe, FINSI, and Google can deliver sustainable, scalable alternatives to fiber. By removing the constraints of terrain, right-of-way, and infrastructure costs, FSO technology positions Globe at the forefront of telecom innovation—helping close connectivity gaps faster and more efficiently.

As Globe continues to invest in future-ready network solutions, this successful trial marks a decisive move toward a more digitally inclusive Philippines, strengthening resilience and empowering communities nationwide.
