The Philippine basketball community is grieving the untimely passing of Gilas Pilipinas Girls standout Ashlyn Abong, who died at just 18 years old.
Her death was announced Saturday by the Gilas Pilipinas Women’s team, who remembered Abong not only for her contributions on the court but also for the quiet strength and kindness she radiated off it.
“In loving memory of our teammate and friend Ashlyn Abong #21,” the team shared in a heartfelt tribute. “Quiet, kind, and strong — that was Ash. She may not have said much, but she always said hi first. That small act meant everything.”
The team recalled Abong’s humility and the quiet way she brought people together — never seeking the spotlight, but always making her presence felt with her gentle demeanor and tireless spirit.
“Ash, your jersey was #21, but to us, you were one of one,” the tribute continued. “We’ll miss your smile, your warmth, and the quiet strength you brought into every room and every game. We are very proud of you. We play for you now. We carry your spirit in every step.”
Abong’s contributions to Philippine youth basketball were already noteworthy. She proudly wore the country’s colors as part of the national team during the FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Cup Division B tournament in 2023. A key member of the National University-Nazareth School (NU-NS) squad, she also helped lead her team to a runner-up finish in the UAAP Season 87 Girls Basketball Tournament, showcasing a promising future that now leaves behind a deep sense of loss.
Tributes from fans, teammates, and coaches have poured in on social media, many remembering Ashlyn as a quiet leader whose impact went far beyond stats or headlines. Her discipline, heart, and humility made her a beloved figure among teammates and coaches alike.
Though her time was short, Ashlyn Abong leaves behind a legacy of courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication — a true inspiration to the next generation of Filipino athletes.
She will forever be remembered as a cherished member of the Gilas family — forever our teammate, forever our #21, forever Ash.
