The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines has extended anew the ban on aircraft flying near Mayon Volcano due to continuing volcanic hazards.
In a Notice to Airmen issued Thursday, flights within the vicinity of Mayon Volcano are prohibited from the surface up to 11,000 feet.
The flight restriction will remain in effect until 9 a.m. on Friday, December 19, according to Caap.
“Flight operators are advised to avoid flying close to the volcano, which remains under Alert Level 1 or low-level unrest,” Caap said.
The latest extension follows an earlier Notam issued on December 10.
That advisory was prompted by observations of lava flow activity at Mayon Volcano on the same day.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology subsequently warned of rising volcanic hazards.
Phivolcs said there are “increased chances of volcanic hazards” at the volcano.
These hazards include sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions.
Phivolcs also cited the risk of rockfall and lahar flows, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
Authorities continue to urge caution as volcanic activity at Mayon remains elevated.
