Formula 1 is no stranger to innovation, but its latest tech test might just redefine how the sport runs behind the scenes. During the 2025 FORMULA 1 HEINEKEN CHINESE GRAND PRIX, F1 and Lenovo successfully trialed the new ThinkPad X9 Aura Edition—an AI-powered laptop designed to handle the breakneck pace of motorsport operations.
This cutting-edge device was deployed at Formula 1’s Event Technical Centre (ETC), the mobile tech nerve center that travels to every Grand Prix. For the first time, an AI PC helped manage live race data processing and operational workflows, proving that the future of motorsport lies not just on the track—but also in smart, edge-powered computing.
A smarter way to race
“This marks a major leap forward,” said Roberto Dalla, Chief Technical and Engineering Officer at Formula 1. “The ThinkPad X9 Aura Edition blends next-gen features like Smart Modes, Smart Share, and Smart Care into one seamless package, improving productivity and the user experience. During the high-stakes sprint weekend in China, we saw firsthand how it enhances data handling and collaboration.”

Built on the new Intel Lunar Lake platform and equipped with Copilot+ AI features, the device prioritizes speed, power efficiency, and intelligent automation—an ideal fit for F1’s goal to become net-zero carbon by 2030.
“In F1, milliseconds matter,” Dalla added. “Tools like this allow our teams to think faster, work smarter, and deliver better content to fans worldwide.”
Tested under pressure
Formula 1’s tech operations aren’t just complex—they’re mobile. The ETC operates as a high-speed broadcast and data command center, collecting telemetry, timing, and video feeds from the racetrack and relaying them back to the UK-based Media & Technology Centre. The success of Lenovo’s AI laptop in this environment signals a major step forward in making F1’s tech infrastructure more powerful yet more portable.
Dr. Tolga Kurtoglu, Chief Technology Officer at Lenovo, called the trial a milestone:
“We put our AI PC to the test in one of the most intense, fast-moving environments imaginable. This is more than just about operational support—it’s about bringing fans closer to the action by accelerating storytelling, enabling real-time content creation, and transforming the viewing experience.”
Compact, powerful, and sustainable
Beyond performance, Lenovo’s ThinkPad X9 Aura Edition is helping F1 address another critical area: sustainability. Thanks to its all-day battery life and military-grade durability, the AI PC offers high mobility with fewer devices. That means less gear shipped, fewer transport emissions, and lower cooling demands at each race.
By reducing hardware needs without sacrificing performance, F1 and Lenovo are building a smarter, greener future for the sport.
The road ahead
With the Shanghai trial setting the pace, Lenovo and F1 are just getting started. The two partners plan to roll out more AI innovations throughout the 2025 season, aiming to transform not just race operations but the entire broadcast ecosystem.
As the world’s most data-driven sport continues to evolve, partnerships like this are pushing the limits—not just of machines, but of how we experience speed, performance, and precision.
F1 is racing into the AI era. And it’s bringing the fans along for the ride.
