Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero expressed strong support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s recent call for all Cabinet secretaries to tender their courtesy resignations, framing it as a critical moment for the administration to make meaningful changes and regain public trust.
In a statement released Thursday, Escudero characterized the President’s move as more than a routine reshuffling. He described it as a “mid-game substitution,” comparing the decision to switching out key players in response to their performance on the field.
“This is not just about replacing underperforming officials,” Escudero said. “The public made it clear through the last elections and recent surveys that they expect more than just a change in faces—they want a government that listens, acts decisively, and serves selflessly.”
The Senate President commended Marcos for taking initiative, calling the shake-up a “good start” that could mark a pivotal point for the administration if followed through with sincerity and strategic intent.
Escudero was candid in pointing out that some members of the President’s inner circle may have done more harm than good.
“The President must recognize those around him who have exploited his trust, eroded his political capital, and put their personal interests above the nation’s,” he said. “Distancing from such individuals is not just advisable—it’s necessary.”
He emphasized that the government’s reset should extend beyond the executive branch. According to Escudero, it should involve a comprehensive reassessment of alliances and governance approaches, ensuring unity and competence across all levels.
“In the end, effective governance requires collaboration beyond party lines. Every official, regardless of political affiliation, must prioritize the Filipino people,” Escudero said.
The call for courtesy resignations has triggered speculation about possible changes in key Cabinet positions, though no formal announcements have been made. Still, Escudero’s remarks signal that some lawmakers see the President’s move as a chance to reset the tone and direction of his administration heading into the second half of his term.
