Rain or Shine begins its long-awaited PBA Season 50 campaign Saturday night against Meralco, in what promises to be a spirited showdown between two hungry contenders aiming to challenge the league’s traditional heavyweights.
Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. at the Ynares Center in Montalban — the closing duel for Week One of the Philippine Cup — before action shifts to Antipolo for the first Sunday double-header of the season.
The clash marks a meeting between two clubs that have steadily built strong foundations over recent years. Meralco, still basking in the glow of its historic Season 48 title but looking to bounce back from a quarterfinal finish last conference, is determined to reclaim its championship form under coach Luigi Trillo.
Rain or Shine, meanwhile, has consistently flirted with greatness. The Elasto Painters have reached the semifinals in four straight conferences — and coach Yeng Guiao believes it’s time to take that elusive next step.
“We’re hoping to get over the hump, make the finals, and see what we can do,” said Guiao, whose team has become a model of youth-driven development and chemistry.
The Elasto Painters’ roster brims with youthful energy, featuring Adrian Nocum, Jhonard Clarito, Andrei Caracut, Gian Mamuyac, Shaun Ildefonso, Anton Asistio, Caelan Tiongson, Felix Lemetti, Mike Malonzo, Keith Datu, and Leonard Santillan — a mix of speed, grit, and promise.
At the center of it all stands Gabe Norwood, the franchise’s heart and soul, embarking on what he has declared his farewell season. The veteran guard remains the steadying presence guiding the new generation toward contention.
For Meralco, Saturday’s matchup is a chance to quickly regroup after a stunning 100–96 loss to expansion team Titan Ultra earlier this week — a game highlighted by Calvin Abueva’s 41-point eruption.
Allein Maliksi, returning from a lengthy layoff, struggled in limited minutes, but the Bolts’ deep lineup and championship pedigree ensure they remain a serious threat.
Having made the playoffs in every conference since their title run, the Bolts are now laser-focused on making a deeper push. “We’ve got the core, the chemistry, and the motivation,” Trillo said earlier in the week. “Now it’s about putting it all together again.”
With both teams carrying chips on their shoulders and aspirations for redemption, the Rain or Shine–Meralco clash is shaping up to be the perfect spark to officially light up PBA Season 50.
