After stunning Meralco in a thrilling debut, Titan Ultra aims to keep its momentum rolling when it faces the rejuvenated Converge FiberXers this Saturday in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Center in Montalban.

Fresh from a confidence-boosting 100-96 upset over the defending champions last Wednesday, the Giant Risers are eyeing back-to-back victories—and another statement win—against a Converge squad touted as one of the most improved teams entering the new season.

Converge’s stock has been on the rise after an impressive 24-18 campaign last year that saw them reach the quarterfinals twice. With Justin Arana, Justine Baltazar, Schonny Winston, and Alec Stockton forming the core, the team became even more formidable after drafting former UAAP MVP Juan Gomez de Liano as the No. 2 overall pick last month.

Pampanga Vice Governor Dennis “Delta” Pineda, now serving as Converge head coach, praised his young guard’s seamless transition into the system.

“Malaking blessing sa team si Juan,” Pineda said during the PBA Media Day. “’Yung experience niya abroad, na-she-share niya agad sa mga locals. Parang matagal na siya sa team—may chemistry na agad sila.”

Should the league approve the pending trade for Dave Ildefonso, the FiberXers could soon become an even bigger threat.

Despite the daunting challenge, Titan coach Johnedel Cardel remains optimistic after his team’s gritty win over Meralco.

“Malakas talaga ang Converge. Alam naman natin ’yung lineup nila,” he said. “Pero bilog ang bola. If we play hard on both ends and stay together, baka maka-ulit kami.”

That belief stems largely from veteran leader Calvin Abueva, whose vintage performance powered Titan’s opening-day triumph. The 37-year-old forward erupted for 41 points, including four triples, along with seven rebounds—his trademark energy setting the tone for the younger players.

“Lahat kami tumatakbo, pinush talaga namin,” Abueva said after the game. “Kasama ko mga bata, kaya kailangan kong i-push sarili ko para makasabay. Pero dahil sa kanila rin, lumabas ’yung energy ko. Kung wala sila, hindi ko makukuha ’yung 41 points.”

For Titan Ultra, it’s not just about scoring or statistics—it’s about proving that their fiery chemistry and relentless hustle can stand toe-to-toe with the league’s elite. Saturday’s clash against Converge will test exactly that.
