Earth Day Is Every Day at SM

Every day should be Earth Day. Our planet is home to countless species, each playing a vital role in maintaining the balance of nature. However, habitat destruction and the overuse of natural resources are threatening this delicate equilibrium. That’s why celebrating Earth Day is not only symbolic—it’s necessary. It reminds individuals, communities, and governments to act together for a sustainable and healthy planet, both for the present and future generations.

Sustainability as a Lifestyle

SM Supermalls embodies this mindset year-round, championing sustainability not just as a one-day event but as an everyday lifestyle. In celebration of Earth Day 2025, SM is inviting everyone to participate in simple actions that can collectively make a significant difference. Through eco-friendly infrastructure, accessible green programs, and community-led initiatives, SM continues to pave the way for greener living.

“Our malls are more than shopping destinations—they are spaces where people and the planet can thrive together,” said Engr. Liza Silerio, Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Program Director of SM Cares for Environment. “Through programs that are easy to join, SM makes it possible for every visitor to take part in a more sustainable future.”

Seven Ways SM Is Making Everyday Earth Day:

Free EV Charging Stations
With 123 EV charging stations across 69 malls, SM has delivered over 14,500 kWh of clean energy to electric vehicle users—and there are 50 more chargers coming in 2025. This move supports the shift to low-emission transportation, making sustainable travel more accessible.

Solar-Powered Properties
SM operates 47 malls with solar installations, generating 27.6 GWh of clean energy in 2024—enough to offset over 4,100 cars’ worth of emissions. The company is aiming for 100 MWp rooftop solar capacity by 2027, with new rollouts planned in 2025.

Energy-Efficient Designs
From Sky Gardens and skylights to LED lighting and motion-sensor escalators, SM malls are designed to conserve energy. SM also contributes 110 MW to the Department of Energy’s Interruptible Load Program, helping stabilize the power grid.

#SMWasteFreeFuture Initiative
This campaign enforces proper waste segregation across all mall tenants using the RDC (Recyclable, Disposable, Compostable) bin system. Internally, SM cultivates a sustainable mindset among its workforce—proving that change begins from within.

Recycling Markets
Held every first Friday and Saturday of the month, SM’s recycling markets have processed over 1 million kilograms of recyclables annually. Visitors can bring paper, plastic, metal, or even old appliances and trade them for cash.

Plastic and E-Waste Drop-Off
Customers can drop off used plastics at 15 participating SM malls, and e-waste at Cyberzone areas nationwide. These programs have diverted 63,874 kg of plastic and over 11,000 kg of e-waste from landfills, in partnership with Friends of Hope and Smart/PLDT.

Coastal Cleanup Drives
In 2024, over 27,000 volunteers across 15 malls helped collect 157,000 kg of trash from coastlines and waterways. SM also organizes weekly and quarterly cleanups, proving how community action can create long-lasting impact.

Every Day is Earth Day at SM

Whether it’s solar panels or EV charging, recycling drives or coastal cleanups, SM Supermalls is proving that small steps lead to big change. Their initiatives reflect a broader commitment to environmental stewardship—making it clear that Earth Day isn’t just April 22, it’s every day.
