President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. advanced several government initiatives this week, focusing on El Niño preparedness, education reforms, diplomatic relations, and investment opportunities to address domestic challenges and support economic growth.
The President’s activities included directing government agencies to strengthen measures against the effects of El Niño, recognizing public school teachers, welcoming Polish President Karol Nawrocki, and undertaking a working visit to Singapore to attract foreign investments.
Government intensifies El Niño preparations
On Monday, October 5, Marcos led a meeting with government officials to assess the country’s preparedness for the El Niño phenomenon, particularly its potential impact on water supply, agriculture, energy, public health, and safety.
He ordered agencies to adopt a coordinated, whole-of-government response to minimize disruptions caused by prolonged dry conditions and rising temperatures.
The President directed the acceleration of water infrastructure projects, implementation of emergency water augmentation measures, and stronger conservation efforts.
He also called for immediate assistance to vulnerable sectors, particularly farmers and fisherfolk, whose livelihoods could be affected by reduced rainfall and water shortages.
Marcos emphasized the importance of protecting agricultural production, mobilizing additional resources, and maintaining essential health services throughout the dry weather conditions.
Marcos reaffirms support for teachers
Also on Monday, the President joined more than 10,000 public school teachers at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City for the culminating celebration of National Teachers’ Day 2026.
During the event, Marcos recognized teachers’ contributions to education and reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving their career opportunities and working conditions.
He highlighted the Expanded Career Progression System, which had facilitated the promotion of approximately 82,105 teachers and school heads as of September.
The President also thanked educators for their dedication, compassion, and guidance in helping Filipino learners succeed.
Philippines, Poland expand bilateral cooperation
On Tuesday, October 6, Marcos welcomed Polish President Karol Nawrocki to Malacañang for a historic state visit, the first by a Polish president since the two countries established diplomatic relations in September 1973.
The two leaders held bilateral discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation in defense, security, trade, investment, technology, energy, and other strategic sectors.
Their meeting was followed by the signing and presentation of an agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.
Both countries also expressed interest in expanding collaboration in cybersecurity, digital connectivity, space technology, legal cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges.
Poland signaled its intention to elevate bilateral relations to a strategic partnership, reflecting growing cooperation on economic and security matters.
Marcos later hosted a state banquet honoring the Polish delegation, including First Lady Marta Nawrocka.
Singapore visit focuses on investments, regional partnerships
On Wednesday, October 7, Marcos departed for a five-day working visit to Singapore to promote the Philippines as an investment destination and strengthen regional cooperation.
A key engagement was his participation in the 24th Forbes Global CEO Conference, where he presented opportunities for international investors in digital technology, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, energy, and healthcare.
The President also met with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to discuss bilateral relations and priorities within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), ahead of Singapore’s chairmanship in 2027.
His itinerary also included a planned visit to the Singapore Nuclear Research and Safety Institute to explore nuclear technology and safety practices as the Philippines considers additional long-term energy options.
FedEx expansion highlights logistics opportunities
During his Singapore visit, Marcos also met with executives of global logistics company FedEx to discuss its expanding operations in the Philippines.
The meeting focused on the planned expansion of the company’s Clark Gateway Hub in Pampanga, which is expected to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2028.
The upgraded facility is designed to increase capacity for international air freight and specialized cargo, strengthening the country’s role in regional logistics and supply chains.
The expansion is also expected to provide greater access to international markets for Philippine businesses, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises.
Marcos is scheduled to hold additional business meetings in Singapore before returning to the Philippines.
President pays respects to former Prime Minister Virata
Before leaving for Singapore, Marcos visited the wake of former Prime Minister Cesar Virata at Heritage Memorial Park in Taguig City on Wednesday.
Virata, who died on October 2, served as finance minister from 1970 to 1986 and prime minister from 1981 to 1986.
The visit was among the President’s final engagements in the country before beginning his overseas working trip.
The week’s activities highlighted the administration’s focus on domestic preparedness, education, international cooperation, and investment promotion as it pursues economic development and government programs.
