DOLE: Double pay for workers on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday

MANILA – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has issued a reminder to employers on proper wage computation for the upcoming Holy Week holidays, particularly April 17 (Maundy Thursday), April 18 (Good Friday), and April 19 (Black Saturday).

For April 17 and 18, both regular holidays, private sector workers who report to work are entitled to 200 percent of their daily wage for the first eight hours.

“If the employee works beyond eight hours, they will receive an additional 30 percent of the hourly rate,” DOLE said. If the holiday also falls on an employee’s rest day, they will get an additional 30 percent on top of the 200 percent. Work done beyond eight hours on such a day will be compensated with another 30 percent based on the hourly rate.

Employees who don’t report for work on April 17 and 18 are still entitled to 100 percent of their wage, provided they were present or on paid leave the day before the holiday. If the preceding day is a rest day or a non-working day, holiday pay will still apply as long as the employee reported or was on leave the day before that.

Meanwhile, April 19 (Black Saturday) is a special non-working day, and the “no work, no pay” rule applies—unless a favorable company policy, practice, or collective bargaining agreement (CBA) states otherwise.

For those working on Black Saturday, they will receive an additional 30 percent of their daily wage for the first eight hours. Overtime work will be paid with another 30 percent of the hourly rate.

If the special day also falls on the employee’s rest day, workers will earn an extra 50 percent of their daily wage, with an additional 30 percent for any work done beyond eight hours.
