DOH-Bicol issues health and safety tips for Holy Week, summer season

The Department of Health in Bicol (DOH-5) on Tuesday issued a set of health and safety reminders to ensure a safe observance of Holy Week and the ongoing summer vacation season (SumVac) in the region.

In a public advisory, DOH-5 encouraged individuals participating in traditional Semana Santa activities such as Visita Iglesia and Stations of the Cross to stay protected against heat exposure by using umbrellas, wearing light and comfortable clothing, and drinking plenty of clean water to stay hydrated. The agency also advised bringing food that doesn’t spoil easily and properly disposing of trash to maintain cleanliness in public spaces.

For families with children, DOH-5 recommended that minors always be accompanied by adults in crowded areas. It also suggested placing contact information in the child’s pocket to assist authorities in case the child gets lost.

In light of penitential rituals still practiced in some communities, the agency reminded devotees to prioritize hygiene and safety. DOH-5 emphasized that any whips or nails used during self-flagellation should be properly cleaned and sterilized—soaked in alcohol, free from rust, and stored safely to avoid contamination. Participants were also advised to immediately clean wounds with soap and clean water after the activity.

The department also recommended getting vaccinated with tetanus toxoid (TT) at least three years prior or anti-tetanus serum (ATS) anytime before participating in any crucifixion-related activities to reduce the risk of infection.

For those traveling during the break, the DOH advised strict adherence to traffic rules. Motorists were reminded to avoid distracted driving, refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or when feeling sleepy, and always wear appropriate safety gear such as seat belts or helmets.

To report emergencies, the DOH Bicol emergency hotline can be reached at (052) 742-5555, local 5042.

Meanwhile, as part of its civic engagement during the Lenten season, the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Daraga Chapter held a blood donation drive on Tuesday at the Daraga Doctors Hospital. The initiative, themed “Dugong Alay, Pagpaparangal sa Kagitingan,” was conducted in celebration of JCI Week and the Day of Valor.

The bloodletting campaign collected 56 bags, totaling over 22,000 cubic centimeters of blood, to help boost the region’s blood supply. Dr. Erika Villaluz, the project chair, said the drive also aims to raise awareness about the benefits of blood donation, including improved cardiovascular health, cholesterol regulation, and the stimulation of new blood cell production.

Villaluz added that the activity serves as a direct response to the government’s call to strengthen the availability of safe and adequate blood supplies across the Bicol Region.
