The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) reported that around 3.1 million Filipinos in 759 barangays cleared of insurgency now have access to electricity through rural electrification projects under the Support to Barangay Development Program (SBDP).
From 2022 to 2025, the DILG completed 463 projects that brought power to remote communities using on-grid connections and off-grid solar systems.
The program has provided lighting for streets and homes, allowing barangays that previously lacked electricity to operate beyond sundown.
In Barangay Banwague, Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental, residents have been able to start small businesses, sell frozen goods, and access Wi-Fi services following the introduction of electricity.
Communities located nearly 30 kilometers from city centers have reported that electricity has improved opportunities for income and daily activities.
In Barangay Bikil, Tubungan, solar-powered streetlights have been installed to assist residents who travel before dawn or return home at night, enhancing road safety.
Barangay officials noted that electrification projects have contributed to livelihood opportunities, community safety, and overall quality of life.
The DILG said over 300 additional rural electrification projects are currently underway in other areas under the SBDP.
The SBDP also supports the construction of schools, water systems, health stations, farm-to-market roads, housing, and agricultural facilities in geographically isolated and previously conflict-affected areas.
The program is implemented in coordination with the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict and is part of efforts to promote peace, inclusive development, and improved living conditions in affected communities.
