DICT begins free WiFi preparations for MRT-stations and trains

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has officially kicked off its technical assessment and groundwork for installing free WiFi access across all stations and trains of Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), one of Metro Manila’s busiest commuter rail lines.

In a statement on Tuesday, DICT announced that deployment teams under its Free WiFi for All (FWFA) Program have begun site assessments in partnership with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and MRT-3 management. This move supports President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s Bagong Pilipinas vision of enhanced public services and digital connectivity.

The free WiFi initiative aims to benefit thousands of daily commuters — from students studying on the go to workers accessing essential services online.

“A Memorandum of Agreement is also in the works, signaling the project’s swift transition from announcement to action,” DICT said.

This project follows Secretary Henry Aguda’s earlier announcement on April 22 about broader digital upgrades in the MRT-3, which include not only expanded free internet but also cashless fare systems and improved commuter safety measures.

Initially, WiFi will be available at all MRT-3 stations, with the long-term goal of providing seamless connectivity even inside the moving trains.
