Desert dogs find new home in Cebu after rescue from Kuwait

A dozen desert dogs seeking a new home and a third chance at life were flown from Kuwait to Cebu on August 15, 2025. The dogs traveled on Qatar Airways, thanks to the strong support of animal lovers who helped cover transport, vaccination, crates, and tickets for the 12 dogs.

Dog rescuer Maria Donnabelle Lee made an urgent public appeal on social media before July 31, 2025, about the dogs in Kuwait facing danger due to the closure of a shelter. The shelter, located in an industrial zone, was deemed an “eyesore” by the building owner, leading to its impending demolition.

Donnabelle, originally from Sibonga, Cebu, expressed her deep concern for the dogs, fearing they would be released back into the harsh desert conditions where food, water, and shelter are scarce. “I was so worried, I panicked. I cried in front of the dogs and asked that they help me pray for assistance,” she recounted.

The dogs had been rescued from the desert of Mina Abdullah about five years ago during the pandemic. With the shelter closure, Donnabelle faced a heartbreaking crisis, stating, “These dogs have known love and safety inside our shelter, but unless help arrives urgently, they will be left to suffer in extreme conditions.”

To ensure the dogs’ safety, Donnabelle and her family initiated a helpline for dog adoption and launched a donation campaign to fund their relocation. “These dogs don’t deserve to die in the desert. Please help us give them a third chance at life,” she urged.

A fenced sanctuary is currently being constructed in Sibonga, covering about 300 square meters, to provide a safe and loving environment for the dogs. Donnabelle expressed gratitude to everyone who supported their efforts, saying, “Your kindness is helping change these dogs’ lives – one flight at a time.”

On July 26, 2025, Donnabelle confirmed that they had secured a flight for the first 12 dogs. “As per Philippine regulations, only three dogs per person per year are allowed. With my family traveling with me, we’ll be able to bring 12 dogs on this flight,” she explained.

Upon arrival in Cebu on August 16, 2025, Donnabelle observed the dogs marking their territory and enjoying their newfound freedom. “I can see that they are very happy. It seems like a thorn was pulled off my heart,” she said, overwhelmed with emotion.

Donnabelle clarified that The Doghouse Project is not an institution but an initiative started by her family and colleagues to rescue dogs. She addressed criticism regarding her focus on rescuing dogs in Kuwait instead of Cebu, stating, “If only each person in Cebu has the heart to take in one stray – just a single stray – there wouldn’t be strays left.”

She emphasized the bond she shares with the dogs, describing them as family that provided emotional support during the pandemic. “Family is about enduring love and unbreakable bond,” she concluded, reiterating the importance of rehoming the dogs despite the challenges involved.
