Denmark assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for August, pledging to prioritize women, peace and security, climate-related risks and the humanitarian impact of armed conflict.
Denmark’s UN ambassador, Christina Markus Lassen, said the council faced worsening conflicts, growing humanitarian suffering and rising geopolitical tensions in Ukraine, Sudan, the Middle East and the Gulf.
She said Denmark would focus on the connection between war and food insecurity, including the effects of disruptions to major trade routes.
Lassen expressed concern over threats to freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that any prolonged disruption could affect food supplies and other essential goods.
Denmark will host a high-level open debate on Aug. 25 on conflict and hunger, with discussions expected to focus on strengthening the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2417.
The council will also hold its annual debate on working methods on Aug. 19.
Other scheduled meetings will cover South Sudan, Yemen, Libya, the occupied Palestinian territories, North Korea, Syria and counterterrorism.
Lassen said the council would hold another straw poll on Aug. 21 for candidates seeking to succeed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. France will assume the council presidency in September.
