Comelec limits August voter registration to first-time and reactivating voters

Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairperson George Garcia announced Friday that the upcoming voter registration period from August 1 to 10 will only accommodate first-time voters and those seeking to reactivate their registration.

“This short window is not enough to process other applications such as transfers,” Garcia explained. “Even if they apply, there’s a chance their applications won’t make it to the Election Registration Board (ERB) hearings, or may not be approved in time.”

ERB hearings determine the approval of registration applications and handle the removal of voters due to death, failure to vote in two consecutive regular elections, or other disqualifying reasons under the law.

Garcia also reaffirmed the commission’s earlier projection of at least one million new registrants during the 11-day period, emphasizing that registration will be conducted nationwide.

“We are still targeting one million registrants. This is a crucial chance for those who haven’t voted yet to register or reactivate their status,” he said.

The Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) are scheduled for December 1.
