Comelec launches satellite voter registration for special needs in local mall and barangays

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on Thursday that satellite registration for voters, particularly those with special needs, will begin Friday at Robinsons Place shopping mall and select barangays. City election officer Ian Macaraya shared that the initiative aims to facilitate voter registration for the upcoming barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

“We hope to reach as many people to register for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections, and the satellite registration will make it easier for them to do this,” Macaraya stated. Priority will be given to persons with disabilities, senior citizens, and pregnant mothers.

Comelec staff will also conduct on-site registration at both male and female dormitories of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) facilities. The barangays participating in the satellite registration include Daro, Batinguel, Piapi, Cadawinonan, Bantayan, Motong, Bajumpandan, Cantil-e, Banilad, and Balugo. Registration will also be available at the City Comelec office.

Macaraya expressed hope for an increase in registrants, particularly among those aged 14 to 17, who are now eligible to vote for their SK candidates. He noted that due to a tight schedule, the Comelec will not accept transfer requests for registration at this time.

The registration period will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, as the poll body prepares for the nationwide voter registration for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections scheduled for August 1-10.
