BUTUAN CITY – Local government units (LGUs) in Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Sur ordered the suspension of classes on Friday morning due to heavy rains.

Rains continue to affect most parts of the Caraga Region, caused by the easterlies, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said in its advisory.

In San Miguel, Surigao del Sur, Mayor Michael Corilla issued Executive Order (EO) No. 29 suspending classes and school-based work in all levels, both in public and private, in the locality.

The EO also cited a report from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) stating that water levels in major river systems have reached the Orange Critical Level, signaling an increased risk of flooding and posing potential danger to residents.

“The MDRRMO shall continue to monitor the situation and provide regular updates and recommendations. All concerned agencies and school administrators are directed to ensure strict compliance with this Order,” the EO said.

Suspension of classes, including the monitoring of the water level of river systems, was also ordered in the towns of Veruela and Sta. Josefa in Agusan del Sur on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH-13) in the Caraga Region issued an advisory saying that a portion of the Surigao-Davao Coastal Road is no longer passable to all types of vehicles on Friday morning due to a landslide caused by heavy rains.

The landslide specifically took place in the portion of Sitio Cabanahan, Barangay Nurcia, in Lanuza, Surigao del Sur.

The DPWH-13 said personnel and equipment from the DPWH First District Engineering Office are in the area for clearing operations. (PNA)
