The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has launched a thorough investigation into the tragic death of veteran journalist Juan “Johnny” Dayang, who was tragically shot at his residence in Kalibo, Aklan, last Tuesday. The 67-year-old journalist succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to a nearby hospital.
In its official statement on Friday, the CHR emphasized its ongoing commitment to creating a safer environment for media workers in the country. As part of this effort, the Commission has mobilized a dedicated quick response team to conduct an independent and impartial investigation into Dayang’s death.
The CHR also underscored the importance of media workers reporting any incidents of threats or harassment they encounter. It encouraged journalists to utilize the newly launched Alisto! Alert Mechanism—a platform designed to enhance media safety by quickly notifying authorities of any attacks, threats, or intimidation.
In addition to the CHR’s efforts, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has also initiated a special task force to investigate the killing. The PNP has mobilized its “Media Safety Vanguards,” a dedicated unit focused on the protection of media personnel, to ensure a comprehensive response to this tragic event.
Dayang, a former publisher of Philippines Graphic and a columnist at Manila Bulletin, was also the president of the Publishers Association of the Philippines Incorporated. His death has left a profound impact on the local media community. In light of this tragedy, the CHR reaffirmed the need for all Filipinos to support and defend journalists, emphasizing that the safety of the press is integral to the nation’s freedom and democracy.
“At this pivotal moment, it is imperative that we unite in support of the Fourth Estate. Our collective action is essential in protecting journalists and upholding the fundamental truth they provide, which is the bedrock of our society’s freedoms,” the CHR statement concluded.
