With their championship defense hanging in the balance, the San Miguel Beermen leaned on grit, depth, and a breakout performance from an unlikely source to wrest control of the PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup Finals.
Behind Rodney Brondial’s career (night, the Beermen outworked and outlasted the TNT Tropang 5G, 96-82, on Wednesday night at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo to grab a pivotal 3-2 series lead.
Thrust into extended minutes with Moala Tautuaa saddled by early foul trouble and June Mar Fajardo dealing with sore knees after a hard fall, Brondial answered the call with authority.
The undersized big man delivered a rare double-double, finishing with 17 points and 15 rebounds, while anchoring a collective effort that saw seven San Miguel players reach double figures.
The defining moment came late. Already cramping and moments away from being subbed out, Brondial found himself open beyond the arc. He let it fly—and buried the triple. The shot stretched San Miguel’s lead to 90-76 with under four minutes left, punctuating a performance that swung the series firmly in the Beermen’s favor.
“Gusto lang talaga namin manalo dahil mahirap ma-down 2-3,” Brondial said, reflecting the urgency that fueled San Miguel’s response. “Naging motivation yung pagkatalo namin last time. Tambak kami noon at gusto talaga naming bumawi.”
He did far more than score. In 33 minutes of all-out effort, Brondial also added two blocks and an assist, setting the tone in a game defined by physical play, loose-ball scrambles, and sheer will.
San Miguel now stands one win away from an All-Filipino title repeat, with Game 6 set for Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. A winner-take-all Game 7, if needed, will be played at the same venue on Wednesday.
The Beermen had to earn it the hard way. TNT came out firing, building a lead that swelled to 16 points as the Tropang 5G dictated the tempo early. But once San Miguel found its rhythm, the tide turned decisively. The Beermen dominated the middle quarters, outscoring TNT 58-32 to erase the deficit and seize control.
“At the start, hindi namin alam kung saan pupunta ang laro,” said San Miguel coach Leo Austria. “Sabi lang namin, we have to stay patient.”
Patience eventually gave way to pressure. The game turned into a bruising contest marked by hard fouls and tense exchanges, including the sequence where Fajardo crashed to the floor and banged both knees. Austria opted to sit his franchise center for long stretches, trusting his supporting cast to carry the load.
They delivered. Alongside Brondial, Fajardo still chipped in 14 points, while Don Trollano added 14, Kris Rosales had 12, and Marcio Lassiter, Moala Tautuaa, and CJ Perez each finished with at least 11. The balance overwhelmed a TNT side that struggled to regain its early momentum.
For Austria, the difference was found in effort. “Makikita natin yung difference from last game hanggang ngayon,” he said. “Sa rebounds panalo kami, at hindi sila nakakuha ng fastbreak points. Ibig sabihin, nandoon yung hustle at hard work.”
The numbers backed him up. San Miguel dominated the boards, 51-36, and completely shut down TNT’s transition game, posting an 11-0 advantage in fastbreak points.
Now on the hill, the Beermen are one strong performance away from closing the door. And if Game 5 was any indication, they are more than willing to win it the hard way.
