Meralco opens its campaign in the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup on Wednesday with a fresh-look roster and plenty of momentum, facing Converge at 7:30 p.m. at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
Coming off a semifinal run in the Philippine Cup, the Bolts head into the new conference retooled and energized, embracing their “Charge Forward” mantra as they look to make an immediate impact against a FiberXers side eager to bounce back from a tough overtime defeat.
Meralco has reinforced its lineup with the arrival of veteran playmaker Jason Brickman, Vic Magbuhos, trade acquisition Javee Mocon, and import Marvin Jones, whose presence adds size, strength, and international pedigree to the squad. The 7-foot Jones brings an impressive résumé, highlighted by a 2025 FIBA Europe Cup title and extensive experience across Greece, Slovenia, Spain, and Montenegro.
Jones is set for an intriguing matchup against Converge import Kylor Kelley, another 7-footer, in what shapes up to be a bruising battle inside. Their showdown could define the tone of the contest, with Meralco expected to lean on a physical, grind-it-out approach while Converge looks to push the pace.
The FiberXers opened the conference in impressive fashion with a 102-94 win over the Macau Black Knights, but stumbled in their next outing, absorbing a 111-100 overtime loss to Terrafirma after going scoreless in the extra session. That setback makes Wednesday’s game even more crucial as Converge tries to regain its footing behind Kelley, Alec Stockton, Juan Gomez de Liano, Justin Arana, and Justine Baltazar.
For Meralco, much of the focus will be on Brickman, whose arrival gives the Bolts the kind of seasoned floor general they have long needed. The 34-year-old Fil-Am guard twice led the US NCAA in assists before building a lengthy professional career in Russia, Germany, Malaysia, Thailand, and Taiwan. His vision, composure, and court sense could prove vital in steering Meralco deeper into contention this conference.
Mocon, meanwhile, adds another valuable dimension to the Bolts’ rotation. Known for his versatility, defensive toughness, and ability to contribute on the boards, he provides Meralco with added flexibility on both ends of the floor.
There is also recent history on the Bolts’ side. The last time these two teams met in the Philippine Cup, Meralco stormed to a convincing 105-84 victory, fueled by a blistering 33-7 opening quarter and a career-high 29 points from CJ Cansino.
This time, though, the stakes feel different. With a revamped roster, a proven import, and renewed ambitions, Meralco’s opener against Converge could serve as an early gauge of just how far this recharged Bolts squad can go.
