BOC hands over 2,954 balikbayan boxes to DMW — after delays

The Bureau of Customs (BOC), through the Port of Davao, officially turned over 2,954 abandoned balikbayan boxes to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) in a ceremonial event in Davao City.

The turnover aims to address the backlog that has caused delays in delivering these packages, which are important lifelines for many OFW households. The boxes typically contain food, gifts, and essential goods sent by Filipinos working abroad.

In a statement, said Customs Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio. “These boxes are more than just packages — they’re filled with love, hope, and sacrifice.” We know what these mean to our kababayans. With DMW’s help, we’re making sure they arrive where they belong.”

The DMW, tasked with protecting and assisting OFWs, will oversee the distribution to ensure the packages reach the intended recipients efficiently. Shipment delays have become more common in recent years due to tighter customs inspections and global logistics challenges.

The joint effort between BOC and DMW aims to expedite processing and delivery, addressing growing concerns from OFW communities. The release of these boxes underscores the government’s ongoing efforts to strike a balance between security protocols and the urgent needs of Filipino families who rely on remittances and care packages.
