The death toll from the trashslide in Cebu City has climbed to 28, based on the latest report from local police as of 2:30 p.m. on Friday, January 16, 2026, as rescue teams continue operations at the disaster site.
Authorities said the incident has affected dozens of individuals, with eight people still missing days after the collapse. Search-and-rescue personnel remain on the ground, carefully combing through debris amid unstable conditions in hopes of locating survivors. At least 18 others were injured in the incident and are currently undergoing medical treatment, officials added.
The deadly landslide occurred Thursday afternoon at a waste disposal facility in Barangay Binaliw, triggering an emergency response that has extended for several days due to the scale of the collapse and the risks posed by shifting soil and accumulated waste.
Following the tragedy, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Central Visayas ordered the immediate suspension of the landfill’s operations pending a full safety assessment and investigation into the cause of the collapse.
The facility is operated by Prime Integrated Waste Solutions Inc., which confirmed the shutdown and said it is coordinating closely with government agencies and the Cebu City government. The company said it is providing assistance to affected families and emphasized that the safety of workers, emergency responders, and nearby communities remains its priority as investigations continue.
Local officials said recovery efforts will persist until all missing individuals are accounted for, while parallel probes are being conducted to determine accountability and prevent similar disasters in the future.
