For young Filipinos, financial security is taking on a more personal meaning. Building wealth still matters, but so does having the confidence to change careers, support a family, and handle life’s unexpected turns without losing financial footing.
That shift emerges from the “PhilLife Meter: Feeling the Insurance Pulse of Pinoy Gen Y and Z” study, which points to a generation seeking more than a future payout from financial protection products.
Among respondents, 65% seek peace of mind from their protection plans, while 64% consider financial stability an essential benefit. Meanwhile, 78% identify themselves as their top protection priority over the next three years—a finding that underscores the importance young Filipinos place on securing their own financial foundations.
For PhilPlans, the pre-need arm of the Philippines First Insurance Group, these priorities are helping reshape the conversation around long-term financial planning. Retirement may feel distant, but the need for stability is already immediate.
“We are seeing a generation that is more self-aware and financially intentional,” said PhilPlans President and CEO Atty. Monico V. Jacob. “They are not only seeking protection from risk but also looking for structures that help them stay financially steady through life’s transitions — from career changes and family responsibilities to retirement.”
The challenge for financial service providers is to make that preparation easier to understand and put into practice. For someone balancing everyday expenses with future goals, a clear savings structure can make long-term commitments feel more manageable.
PhilPlans is responding through pension offerings designed to help younger Filipinos build consistent saving habits while preparing for future financial needs.
Among these is PhilPlans Futura, which provides yearly cash benefits from the 10th through the 24th year, followed by a return of payment in the 25th year. The structure combines scheduled cash benefits with funds for later-life needs.
Another offering, Ingat Yaman Kaban, provides yearly cash benefits and a guaranteed lump sum by the 15th year. It is positioned for individuals looking to develop financial discipline while setting aside money for future use.
According to PhilPlans, these offerings aim to make planning more approachable for first-time savers, freelancers, young entrepreneurs, and corporate employees. The emphasis is on straightforward benefits and a structured approach to saving—features intended to help young professionals turn financial intentions into lasting habits.
“Our goal is to remove the intimidation factor from financial planning. By offering simple plans with robust protection, we enable Gen Y and Z to secure that peace of mind today, so they can focus on living their lives fully,” Jacob said.
The study’s findings suggest that the appeal of long-term planning increasingly rests on what it can offer in the present: a sense of control, a clearer direction, and confidence that future needs are being considered.
For a generation navigating changing careers and growing responsibilities, that peace of mind is becoming part of the definition of financial success.
