Alex Eala promises strong comeback after historic U.S. Open stint

History was made in New York, and it carried the colors of the Philippine flag. Alex Eala, just 20 years old, shocked the tennis world with a stunning win at the 2025 US Open—becoming the first-ever Filipino to score a main draw victory in a Grand Slam.

The young tennis sensation toppled world No. 14 Clara Tauson in an upset that sent Pinoys around the globe cheering. For one shining night, Flushing Meadows felt like Manila, with Filipino fans roaring as Eala powered her way into the record books.

Her fairytale run, however, ended in the next round against Spain’s Cristina Bucsa. But if anyone thinks this is the end of Eala’s rise, think again. The Pinay pride herself declared: “I’ll be back stronger.”

“US Open ‘25, what an experience! I’ve never in my life felt so loved on a tennis court. Salamat sa lahat ng nagdasal at sumuporta, lalo na sa ating mga kababayan in New York,” Eala wrote on social media after her historic run.

The defeat didn’t dampen her spirit. Instead, it fueled her fire. “I wished I could’ve gone deeper this week, but it wasn’t meant to be. I’ll be back stronger. For now, it’s back to work! Salamat, New York!” she promised.

What’s next for the country’s highest-ranked tennis star? A quick breather before the Sao Paulo Open in September, then all eyes on the Australian Open in January 2026. PHILTA also wants her in national colors this December for the Southeast Asian Games—where only gold will satisfy fans hungry for more glory.

For a nation hooked on basketball and boxing, Alex Eala’s US Open breakthrough was a jaw-dropping reminder: Pinoys belong on tennis’ biggest stage too. And with her fiery vow to return stronger, the Philippines may just have a future Grand Slam champion in the making.
