One commanding victory has revived Alex Eala’s Ningbo Open campaign. Now, the Filipina faces a challenge that could make her comeback even sweeter.
Eala will battle Russia’s Diana Shnaider, ranked No. 13 in the world, for a quarterfinal spot in the WTA 500 tournament in China. Their second-round showdown marks their first meeting on the WTA Tour, giving both young stars a fresh opponent to figure out under pressure.
The 21-year-old Filipina arrives with renewed momentum after dismantling France’s Diane Parry, 6-3, 6-1, in the opening round. That victory snapped a three-match losing streak following disappointing early exits in Singapore and Wuhan.
What made Eala’s performance stand out was how decisively she took charge. With the opening set tied at 3-3, she swept seven straight games, leaving Parry struggling to regain a foothold. Eala finished the contest in just 77 minutes, recording 12 winners and only nine unforced errors.
Against Shnaider, that discipline could become her biggest weapon.
The 22-year-old Russian had a more demanding route to the second round, edging Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva, 7-5, 7-6(4). Her ability to close out two tight sets offers a warning for Eala: a close scoreline will hardly guarantee an opening.
Their encounter also features two left-handers separated by seven places in the rankings, with Eala currently at No. 20. For the Filipina, beating Shnaider would mean extending her Ningbo run while claiming a victory over another higher-ranked rival.
Despite her recent setbacks, Eala’s season already reflects considerable progress. Her win over Parry was her 34th tour-level victory of 2026, compared with just 15 across her career before the year began.
Now comes the question Filipino fans will be watching closely: can she turn a welcome return to form into a quarterfinal breakthrough in Ningbo?
