Filipino tennis star Alex Eala delivered a commanding performance on Monday, dismantling Italian Lucia Bronzetti in just 61 minutes, 6-0, 6-1, to secure her place in the Round of 16 at the WTA 250 Lexus Eastbourne International.
Eala, currently ranked No. 77 in the world, barely broke a sweat as she asserted dominance from the opening serve, converting five of nine break point opportunities and winning 22 of 28 points on her first serve. The one-sided win marks a significant momentum boost for the 20-year-old rising star, who continues to build her form ahead of her Grand Slam main draw debut at Wimbledon next week.
Prior to entering the main draw, Eala had to survive the qualifying rounds, where she outlasted American Hailey Baptiste in a tough three-set match. But against Bronzetti, the world No. 61, Eala showed no signs of fatigue, showcasing sharp groundstrokes, a strong service game, and impressive court coverage throughout the match.
With the victory, Eala advances to the second round of the main draw, where she awaits the result of the upcoming first-round clash between local favorite Sonay Kartal and world No. 4 Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia. The winner of that matchup will face Eala on Wednesday.
The Eastbourne Open is one of the key tune-up tournaments leading into Wimbledon, and Eala’s early success here signals that she may be ready to make waves on grass—a surface on which she has steadily grown more comfortable.
Now with renewed confidence and rhythm, Eala continues to turn heads as one of Asia’s most promising talents on the WTA Tour.
