AI powers big gains for small stores as Packworks reports 46% sales surge

Artificial intelligence is transforming the humble sari-sari store into a smarter, more profitable neighborhood enterprise, with new data from Packworks.io showing just how quickly digital tools can boost micro-retail performance.

A fresh analysis by the tech startup found that sari-sari stores using AI-powered insights recorded a 46 percent jump in daily gross merchandise value just two weeks after receiving data-driven recommendations. The findings, based on over 300 stores studied in September 2025, also revealed a 17 percent rise in total sales during the same period.

What makes the improvement more striking is that these stores actually operated less: despite running on 20 percent fewer selling days—from five days down to four—stores applying AI recommendations still earned more. Packworks says this proves how AI helps owners optimize inventory, choose the right product mix, and plan smarter, turning limited store hours into higher-yield days.

The insights come from Packworks’ Store Insighting Project (SIP), a personalized AI-powered document that transforms transaction histories into clear, actionable guidance. By comparing store performance before and after SIP engagement, Packworks found that sales growth was largely driven by better movement of underperforming products flagged by the AI tool.

This innovation is backed by strong research and public-private support. Packworks developed its precision marketing tool through the DOST-PCIEERD Startup Grant Fund Program and tapped STT GDC Philippines’ AI Synergy Lab to run large-scale models. Ateneo’s BUILD program also helped strengthen the startup’s data warehousing and intelligence systems.

“Even at this early stage, we’re already seeing higher sales and better efficiency for stores using our AI tools,” said Packworks Chief Data Officer Andoy Montiel. “As more microretailers learn to apply these insights, we expect even greater gains.”

Co-Founder Hubert Yap added that Packworks aims to help close the country’s AI adoption gap. While AI could unlock PHP 2.8 trillion in economic value by 2030, only 14.9 percent of Philippine businesses currently use AI tools, according to PIDS.

“Our mission is to make AI practical and accessible to even the smallest retailers,” Yap said. “The potential for growth at the neighborhood level is enormous.”

Packworks’ push aligns with the Philippine Development Plan 2023–2028, which highlights digital transformation as a key driver of economic revitalization.
