Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel said on Thursday that the possible declaration of a “food security emergency for rice” is justified.
He mentioned that data supports the need for such a declaration.
“May solid data tayo na justified talaga ‘to,” Tiu Laurel said during a Palace press briefing.
The National Price Coordinating Council approved a resolution to declare a “food security emergency for rice,” as the price of the product remains high.
The DA chief added that he is still waiting for the resolution and has yet to discuss the matter with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
According to Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque, the resolution will allow the National Food Authority (NFA) to release its buffer stocks of rice to help stabilize prices.
Roque also stated that the move will encourage the DTI to take action in protecting consumer welfare.
As of now, the NFA holds 300,000 metric tons of rice in its buffer stocks.
