President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday inspected the ongoing construction of the Quezon Avenue Station of the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) in Quezon City.
The station is part of Contract Package 102, awarded to the joint venture of Nishimatsu Construction Company Limited and D.M. Consunji Inc.
The Php 25.538-billion package covers the construction of a 3.1-kilometer tunnel and two underground stations, Quezon Avenue and East Avenue.
Tunnel boring works connecting the two stations have already been completed.
Marcos welcomed the project’s progress, saying the subway would improve access to public transportation and provide commuters with more travel options.
“This is going to be a very important part of the city. And this is a very important day today because we are commemorating the breakthrough of the tunnel boring machine here in Quezon Avenue,” he said.
He added that the project was gradually taking shape and would eventually complement existing rail systems, including the MRT.
The tunnel section between Quezon Avenue and East Avenue is 1.13 kilometers long and reaches a depth of 34 meters.
On Sept. 16, Marcos also led the groundbreaking for the MMSP’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport station in Pasay City under Contract Package 109.
The 33-kilometer subway will have 17 stations from Valenzuela City to NAIA Terminal 3 and is expected to cut travel time between Quezon City and the airport from about one hour and 10 minutes to 40 minutes.
Financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the project is expected to serve around half a million commuters once completed.
The government is targeting completion of the MMSP by the fourth quarter of 2031.
