For most of his life, Diosdado “Tatay Ebang” Evangelista carried a dream quietly in his heart.
But like many Filipino parents, he chose to set that dream aside.
Instead of pursuing his own education, Tatay Ebang spent decades working under the scorching sun as a farmer in Candoni, Negros Occidental. From rice fields and sugarcane plantations to cacao and ginger farms, he toiled day after day, not for personal ambition, but for something he believed mattered more: giving his children a better future.
Every harvest, every sleepless night, and every peso he earned went toward sending his four children to school.
One by one, he watched them walk across graduation stages he himself had never reached.
For many, that would have been enough.
But deep inside, the dream never disappeared.
When all four of his children had finally earned college degrees, Tatay Ebang made a decision that surprised many around him. At the age of 65, when most people are preparing for retirement, he enrolled at Central Philippines State University (CPSU)-Candoni Campus to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness.
He was old enough to be the grandfather of many of his classmates.
Yet he showed up.
He attended classes, completed assignments, took examinations, and embraced student life once again. While others saw his age, Tatay Ebang focused only on the goal he had postponed for decades.
In 2023, at 69 years old, he finally earned his college diploma.
It was a moment years in the making—a reward for perseverance, sacrifice, and an unwavering belief that learning has no age limit.
But he wasn’t finished.
Determined to become a licensed professional agriculturist, he took the Agriculturist Licensure Examination (ALE) in 2024. When he failed on his first attempt, he faced a crossroads familiar to many dreamers.
He could have stopped.
After all, he had already proven enough.
Instead, he chose to try again.
He returned to his review materials, studied harder, and prepared for another chance.
That decision changed everything.
In the November 2025 Agriculturist Licensure Examination, Tatay Ebang finally heard the words he had waited a lifetime for.
He passed.
At 72 years old, the farmer who once sacrificed his own education so his children could graduate became one of the country’s 6,678 new licensed agriculturists.
The achievement earned recognition from CPSU during a campus convocation, but for many Filipinos, his story represents something far greater than a professional license.
It is the story of a father who spent years building the dreams of others before finally allowing himself to pursue his own.
It is a reminder that success is not measured by how quickly a goal is achieved, but by the courage to keep going despite setbacks, delays, and the passing of time.
Reflecting on his journey, Tatay Ebang shared a simple but powerful message:
“Age should not be a barrier to fulfilling one’s dreams. What matters is taking action and finding a way.”
His words carry the weight of a lifetime of sacrifice.
For every parent who put their children first.
For every worker who postponed their ambitions to provide for their family.
For every person who thinks it is already too late.
Tatay Ebang’s story offers a different answer.
Sometimes dreams take decades to bloom.
But they can still come true.
