Forget boring bank cards. The latest wallet accessory wants to combine Filipino art, everyday spending and sustainability in one colorful piece of plastic.
Maya has rolled out the special-edition Bukad Card, a Visa-powered prepaid card featuring vibrant illustrations inspired by Philippine nature — and it comes with an environmental twist.
The card is made from 100% recycled plastic.
Designed by Filipino visual artist and illustrator Raxenne Maniquiz, Bukad bursts with flowers, foliage, wildlife and intricate details inspired by the country’s natural landscape.
Its name plays on the Filipino word bukadkad, evoking the image of flowers coming into bloom.
More than a pretty card
While its colorful artwork could make it look like a collectible, Bukad remains a fully functional payment card.
Powered by Visa, it can be used for purchases and ATM withdrawals wherever Visa is accepted worldwide. Cardholders can also earn 1% cashback on local in-store and online purchases.
The recycled material is not limited to the special-edition release either.
Maya said it has completed its transition to 100% recycled plastic for all newly produced wallet cards, replacing virgin plastic while maintaining their security, durability and functionality.
That turns Bukad into the colorful face of a much broader change happening inside the fintech company’s card lineup.
From wallet flex to fashion piece
And for people who think the artwork deserves more space than a wallet can offer, there’s another twist.
Maniquiz’s illustrations have also been transformed into a limited-edition Bukad scarf, essentially allowing users to wear the artwork featured on their payment card.
The scarf is available exclusively at the PURVEYR Fair at the World Trade Center Tent. Customers purchasing the Bukad Card for P350 at the event can get the scarf for free while supplies last.
The special-edition card is also available through the Maya app.
Fintech gets fashionable
The release shows how financial products are moving beyond pure utility.
Payment cards have traditionally been differentiated by rewards, convenience and financial features. But as digital wallets make physical cards less visible in everyday transactions, design can give consumers another reason to keep one in their pockets.
Bukad takes that idea further by combining Filipino creativity, fashion and recycled materials with a card designed for everyday spending.
It may still be something you tap, swipe or insert at checkout.
But this time, you might actually want people to notice it first.
