Whistleblower and former PCSO official Sandra Cam dies at 64

Sandra Cam, a former Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) board member and prominent government whistleblower, died on Thursday, April 10, 2025. She was 64.

Her son confirmed her passing through a heartfelt post on Facebook, saying, “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dearly beloved mother, Sandra Abaño Martinez-Cam, who was called to join our Creator.”

Cam rose to national prominence in 2005 when she publicly admitted to being a former “jueteng” bagwoman and turned whistleblower, exposing alleged corruption involving illegal gambling and public officials. Her bold revelations led to heightened scrutiny of illegal numbers games and their alleged political ties.

Throughout her controversial public life, Cam earned recognition for her fierce stance against corruption. Her family said she received accolades including the “Dangal ng Bayan” award and was honored as a “Natatanging Filipina na Sumusulong sa Pagtulong at Paglaban sa Korapsyon” for her “dauntless courage, bold spirit, and unwavering dedication as a diligent fighter for truth.”

Under the Duterte administration, Cam was appointed to the PCSO board, further expanding her involvement in public service. However, in 2020, she was embroiled in controversy after being charged with the murder of former Masbate Vice Mayor Charlie Yuson III. The case was dismissed in 2023.

Despite a career marked by sharp turns and fierce controversy, Sandra Cam carved out a name for herself as a relentless crusader, unafraid to challenge the powerful and expose wrongdoing—leaving behind a complex but indelible legacy.
