MANILA – Danger and extreme-danger heat index levels are possible from late February to June next year, a weather forecaster said Wednesday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has been recording danger-level heat indices in some parts of the country due to El Niño.

Heat index is what the temperature feels like to the human body when air temperature and relative humidity combine.

Danger level ranges from 42°C to 51°C, while 52°C and above are considered extreme danger levels.

In a radio interview, Glaiza Esculiar said PAGASA has recorded danger-level heat indices in some parts of the country, and higher temperatures are expected to continue until next year.

On Wednesday, heat index levels of 42°C to 43°C were recorded in Dumangas, Iloilo; Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur; La Carlota, Negros; Cuyo, Palawan; and San Jose, Occidental Mindoro.

Esculiar warned that very high temperatures could increase the risk of heat cramps and heat stroke.

“Even if you don’t go outdoors but still do activities amid the danger-level heat index, you are still at risk for heat stroke,” she said.

Meanwhile, Esculiar said cool weather will still be experienced during the northeast monsoon or amihan season, or the “ber” months.

“(But) Because of El Niño, the minimum temperatures will not be as low as the temperatures last year,” she added. (PNA)
