The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela in late June rose to 6,125, a senior government official said Monday.

National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said emergency teams rescued 6,642 people following the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes on June 24.

He added that 60,992 people required hospital treatment as authorities continued responding to the widespread damage.

Government inspectors assessed more than 40,000 homes to determine whether they remained safe for occupancy.

Of the residences inspected, 25,325 were declared habitable, 9,866 were placed under restricted use and 6,433 were classified as high risk.

Rodriguez said the government had turned over 287 new homes to families displaced by the disaster.

Cleanup crews also removed more than 382,230 tons of debris, equivalent to about 16.5 percent of the estimated wreckage.

Relief, housing and rehabilitation operations remained underway more than a month after the earthquakes caused extensive destruction across the country.
