UST’s Rosario breaks UAAP record in 100m dash

University of Santo Tomas (UST) sprinter Franceine Jhobie Rosario shattered the girls’ 100-meter dash record in the UAAP Season 88 athletics tournament on Thursday night at the New Clark City Sports Hub in Capas, Tarlac.

Rosario clocked 11.97 seconds, breaking the 12.28-second mark previously set by University of the East’s (UE) Jeralyn Rodriguez last season. Adamson’s Juvelle Matnog (12.25) and UST’s Lhynette Libranda (12.48) claimed silver and bronze, respectively.

UST continued to dominate as Liana Ascan ruled the girls’ 800m event in 2:19.34, followed by Adamson’s Erika Joy Dorado (2:26.61) and UST’s Shaina Igcas (2:30.84).

In the 2000m racewalk, UE’s Sep Blesse Placido took gold with a time of 10:03.19, improving her own record of 10:15.39. Teammate Meljane Dano (10:03.77) secured silver, while Adamson’s Iralea Dumaguin (10:14.68) got bronze.

Adamson’s Niorwyne Edrada ended UE’s two-year reign in shot put with a 10.43m throw, beating UE’s Alyannah Ico (10.27) and UST’s Yih Fernandez (9.50).

UST leads the girls’ division with 87 points, followed by UE (73) and Adamson (72).

In the boys’ division, defending champion UST sits on top with 112 points, trailed by Adamson (106) and National University Nazareth School (54).

UST’s Jayvee Ceballos broke the hammer throw record with a 43.22m toss, surpassing Ateneo’s 41.18m mark from 2012. Ateneo’s Alessandro Nieto (40.55) and UST’s Tayshaun Donasco (40.35) completed the podium.

Novie Jay Masangcap of UST topped the 800m (1:53.20), edging UE’s Anthony Cariaso (1:53.25) and NUNS’ Jerico Cadag (1:54.20).

In other events, NUNS’ Efosa John Paul Aguinaldo broke the triple jump record with 14.78m, while Adamson’s Kent Ebron set a new pole vault record at 4.15m.

Adamson’s Abdul Saud also set a new meet record in the 5000m racewalk (23:55.35), while De La Salle Zobel’s Pi Durden Wangkay, fresh from his Asian Youth Games gold, won the 100m dash in 10.88 seconds — edging UST’s Prince Cuyos (10.88) and Elreb Taduran (10.92).
