WASHINGTON — The United States is preparing to seek additional financial contributions from NATO allies to sustain a weapons supply program for Ukraine amid a funding shortfall of approximately $2 billion, Bloomberg reported Monday.
Citing people familiar with the discussions, the report said Washington could make the request as early as this month to secure more funding for NATO’s Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), which enables allied nations to finance the purchase of US-made weapons for Kyiv.
US officials have already informed some NATO members of their intention to request additional contributions, although the exact amount has yet to be determined.
According to the sources, who requested anonymity because the discussions were private, the program is facing a roughly $2 billion funding gap covering weapons packages that have already been approved.
Despite the shortfall, Washington has continued supplying military equipment to Ukraine without waiting for NATO allies to complete their financial contributions.
The funding gap could widen further if the Pentagon approves additional weapons shipments, the report said.
PURL has emerged as a major mechanism for coordinating military assistance to Ukraine, allowing participating NATO countries to pool resources to purchase American weapons and defense equipment.
The initiative has supported deliveries of air defense systems and other military hardware needed by Ukrainian forces as Russia’s war against Ukraine continues.
The anticipated funding request comes amid political tensions between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, although military assistance through the program has continued.
Bloomberg reported that the Pentagon has maintained weapons deliveries even as financial contributions from NATO allies have fallen behind the pace of approved shipments.
The planned appeal underscores Washington’s efforts to secure greater financial participation from its European allies while maintaining military support for Kyiv.
