The United States has announced additional funding for security cooperation with the Philippines to accelerate the modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and strengthen military coordination between the two allies.

The announcement followed a meeting between US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. on October 28, where they discussed expanding defense cooperation and upgrading military capabilities.

During the meeting, both officials agreed to fast-track the modernization of command and control systems to improve real-time coordination, operational readiness and interoperability between American and Philippine forces.

They also discussed further developing facilities under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), particularly infrastructure and storage facilities supporting joint military operations in the Philippines.

Hegseth announced that the US Department of War would increase funding for security cooperation to support the AFP’s modernization efforts and enhance interoperability between the two countries’ armed forces along the First Island Chain.

The First Island Chain is a strategically important stretch of islands in the western Pacific that includes the Philippines and plays a significant role in regional defense and security.

The planned investments are expected to strengthen the Philippine military’s capabilities while improving coordination with US forces in responding to emerging regional security challenges.

The discussions also underscored the continuing defense partnership between Manila and Washington, particularly in strengthening military readiness, modernizing defense infrastructure and maintaining regional security.

The amount of additional US funding and the specific timetable for its implementation were not disclosed.
