US Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy said President Donald Trump had “lost” the war with Iran and called for an agreement to end the fighting, warning that a prolonged conflict could further strengthen Tehran’s position.
Murphy said Washington should prioritize ending hostilities and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, even if reaching an agreement required accepting unfavorable terms.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for global energy shipments, making disruptions in the waterway a concern for countries dependent on imported oil and other petroleum products.
Murphy argued that continued fighting was weakening the United States while giving Iran greater leverage as negotiations remained stalled.
Iranian officials have reportedly sought reparations, sanctions relief and an end to US military operations as conditions for a settlement.
The senator also warned that prolonged disruption to the conflict and the strategic waterway could drive costs higher, adding economic pressure beyond the countries directly involved in the fighting.
Murphy said he would oppose additional funding intended to prolong US military operations against Iran.
He added that he would support replenishing US weapons and ammunition after the conflict ends.
