The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on Tuesday that explicitly demanded Israel withdraw from the occupied Syrian Golan to the line held on June 4, 1967.
The resolution, penned by Egypt, was approved by a significant majority, receiving 123 votes in favor, with only seven nations voting against and 41 abstentions.
The UN body declared Israel’s continued presence and de facto annexation of the territory to be “illegal.”
It specifically reaffirmed that Israel’s 1981 decision to impose its laws and administration on the occupied Syrian Golan is “null and void” and holds “no validity whatsoever.”
The General Assembly determined that the ongoing occupation of the Syrian Golan remains a significant “stumbling block in the way of achieving a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in the region.”
It reiterated the call for Israel to comply with previous Security Council resolutions and fully withdraw from the area. (Anadolu)
