US President Donald Trump stirred fresh controversy after sharing a map that visually extends the American flag across neighboring countries and territories, including Canada, Mexico and Greenland.
The image appeared on Trump’s Truth Social account without any explanation of what the altered boundaries were meant to represent. His administration has not announced a policy corresponding to the map.
The post followed another image in which New Mexico was labeled “New America,” with part of the state’s existing name crossed out. No official process to rename New Mexico has been announced by the White House.
The graphics drew criticism from New Mexico officials. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham rejected any suggestion that the state’s identity was open to change, while members of the state’s congressional delegation separately defended its name and cultural heritage.
Trump has previously used geographic names as part of his political agenda. In 2025, he directed the federal government to adopt “Gulf of America” as the US government’s name for the body of water historically known as the Gulf of Mexico.
His attention has also extended beyond place names. Greenland has figured prominently in Trump’s foreign policy rhetoric, with his administration pursuing US claims involving the self-governing Danish territory and generating diplomatic friction with Denmark.
The latest map appeared amid worsening tensions between Washington and Ottawa, while the Trump administration has also maintained economic pressure on Cuba through sanctions and other restrictions.
Trump did not say whether the map represented an actual territorial objective. The image alone carries no legal effect on international borders or the sovereignty of the countries and territories depicted.
