U.S. President Donald Trump stated he was being “sarcastic” when he previously claimed he could resolve the Ukraine crisis within 24 hours as a presidential candidate.
In a pre-recorded interview aired on March 16, Trump admitted to “being a little bit sarcastic” but emphasized his commitment to achieving peace.
“What I really mean is I’d like to get it settled. And I’ll — I think I’ll be successful,” he said, warning that failure to reach a ceasefire with Russian President Vladimir Putin would be “bad news for this world.”
Trump is working to secure Putin’s backing for a 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine accepted last week, as heavy aerial strikes continued and Russia advanced in Kursk.
“I think I know him pretty well, and I think he’s going to agree,” Trump said.
