US President Donald Trump is once again positioning himself as a central figure in maintaining global stability, claiming that Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him Beijing would not attempt a military takeover of Taiwan while Trump remains in office.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said the pledge came directly from Xi during private discussions. “He told me, ‘I will never do it as long as you’re president,’” Trump recounted. “I said, ‘Well, I appreciate that.’ But he also added, ‘I am very patient, and China is very patient.’”
The comments, aired just as Trump prepares for renewed talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin over Moscow’s war in Ukraine, underscore Trump’s effort to frame himself as uniquely capable of deterring geopolitical flashpoints. Trump suggested that Beijing views him as a leader whose presence alone is enough to put any invasion plans on hold.
Washington’s official position remains far more delicate. The United States acknowledges the “One China” policy but remains Taiwan’s most important arms supplier and political backer, even without formal diplomatic ties. For Beijing, Taiwan is considered a breakaway province that must eventually be reunified, by force if necessary.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington reiterated that Taiwan is the “most important and sensitive issue” in US-China relations, urging Washington to avoid crossing Beijing’s red lines.
While Taiwan has repeatedly rejected China’s sovereignty claims, Trump’s framing of the issue casts his presidency as a kind of geopolitical insurance policy — suggesting his personal rapport with Xi has kept the Taiwan Strait from boiling over.
Whether Trump’s account reflects actual policy assurances from Beijing or is part of his broader political narrative remains unclear. Still, his remarks sharpen the contrast he seeks to draw: that under his leadership, adversaries think twice before making their boldest moves.
