Tropical Cyclone Ada intensified into a tropical storm on Thursday, the state weather bureau confirmed.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the system is now packing sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching 80 kph.
Moving northwest at around 15 kph, Ada was last monitored roughly 395 kilometers east of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte.
Pagasa has raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over parts of Luzon, including Sorsogon, southeastern Albay, and Catanduanes, alerting residents of possible strong winds and rough seas.
Several areas in the Visayas are also under Signal No. 1, including Northern Samar, Samar, Eastern Samar, Biliran, Leyte, and Southern Leyte, as the storm approaches.
In Mindanao, the advisory covers Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur, where local authorities warned against travel in exposed coastal areas.
Ada, which developed into a tropical depression on Wednesday, is the first storm of 2026, prompting government agencies and local governments to urge preparedness and precautionary measures.
