Tourism activities in Mt. Pinatubo suspended amid Aeta land rights protest

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has urged tourists to comply with the suspension of all travel and tourism-related activities in Mt. Pinatubo, Botolan, Zambales. The move follows Executive Order No. 05 s. 2025, issued by the Botolan local government, which took effect on May 2, 2025.

“The DOT acknowledges the significant role that Mt. Pinatubo plays in the local tourism industry and fully supports the actions taken by the Botolan LGU under Mayor Jun Omar C. Ebdane,” the agency said in a social media post.

The DOT also cited the importance of addressing concerns raised by five Ayta clans from Capas, Tarlac, during a recent consultative session organized by the DOT Central Luzon office.

In April, members of the Aeta community blocked access to Mt. Pinatubo’s crater, demanding fair compensation and recognition of their ancestral domain. While several individuals were briefly taken into custody, they were released without charges.

“We are seeking explanation from the law enforcement authorities on the propriety of taking into custody of the Indigenous Peoples who are peacefully airing their grievances within the four corners of their ancestral domain,” the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) said in a statement.

“The actions of the Aeta community underscore the need for meaningful dialogue on ancestral land rights and equitable tourism practices,” the NCIP added. The agency has been engaging with the indigenous groups, local governments, and stakeholders since October 2024.
