In a digital age where creativity and self-expression thrive online, TikTok is taking a bold step to ensure teens can enjoy the platform safely—with parents actively involved in their journey.

TikTok recently hosted an engaging panel discussion in the Philippines that brought together policy makers, advocates, and tech experts to talk about one thing: empowering parents to guide their teens in the digital world without limiting their creative freedom. The event featured insights from Hazel Joy Bitaña of Child Rights Coalition Asia and Peachy Paderna, TikTok’s Public Policy Manager for the Philippines, and was joined by Bea Bautista, TikTok Philippines’ Head of Communications.

The conversation kicked off with a look at how digital technology is reshaping parenting, teen behavior, and family relationships. From there, it dove into the tools TikTok has developed to help parents support their teens’ online experiences in thoughtful and practical ways.

“Today’s teens turn to TikTok not just to be entertained, but to learn, create, and share what matters to them,” said Hazel Bitaña. “It’s important to give them the freedom to explore while also making sure parents have the right tools to help them stay safe.”

Peachy Paderna echoed this message, emphasizing TikTok’s commitment to building trust between parents and teens. “We understand that teens are growing up in a world where the digital space is second nature. Our features like Family Pairing, the Guardian’s Guide, and the Teen Safety Center are all designed to strike a balance between freedom and supervision—giving teens space to grow, with the guidance they need.”

Bitaña also praised TikTok’s thoughtful approach to safety. “Children have the right to be protected, but they also have the right to express themselves. Parents can play a key role by having open conversations with their teens about their digital experiences.”

TikTok’s Family Pairing feature, launched in 2020, has evolved to offer more flexible supervision tools. These allow parents to tailor the app experience according to their family’s routines and values:

  • Time Away lets parents schedule app-free hours—ideal during school, meals, or bedtime.
  • Visibility on Followers allows parents to see who their teens follow, who follows them, and which accounts are blocked.
  • Report Alerts enables teens to notify a trusted adult when they report problematic content.
  • Wind Down offers calming reminders to users under 16 after 10 PM, promoting healthier nighttime habits through guided meditation.

These features are part of TikTok’s science-backed approach to digital wellness, making screen time healthier and more mindful.

Personalizing the for you feed: More control, better experiences
eyond parental tools, TikTok is also giving users more control over their own content experience. Smart Keyword Filtering allows users to block certain hashtags, phrases, or topics they’d rather not see in their feed. This helps young users filter out unwanted content and focus on what truly resonates with them.

TikTok has also introduced a new For You Feed Educational Guide—a helpful resource to explain how the algorithm works and how users can customize their feed responsibly. These tools reinforce TikTok’s #ThinkTwice campaign, encouraging everyone to be more intentional with what they consume, engage with, and share.

A safer, smarter digital experience for all
From enhanced parental controls to smarter feed management, TikTok continues to evolve its safety features in collaboration with families, experts, and communities. The goal is simple: help teens thrive online, while giving parents peace of mind.

By empowering parents and teens alike, TikTok is proving that digital freedom and safety don’t have to be at odds—they can go hand in hand.
