Always a title favorite, the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs will be motivated this season in a different way: rallying behind ailing slotman Alfred Loreto.
Home to some of the best basketball talents in the national team and the PBA, UST’s junior program has been an epitome of grit, passion, and glory.
As the season begins on Sunday (Jan. 19), the Cubs will summon their strength on behalf of the 6-foot-7 Loreto, who, as reported by Tiebreaker Times, is suffering from pituitary macroadenoma.
Though not classified as cancer, a pituitary macroadenoma is a form of benign tumor in the brain that can cause problems with vision and headaches.
Now, don’t be surprised if you hear “Go Alfred” from the stands, instead of the usual “Go USTe.”
Loreto, who was diagnosed just last week, has undergone surgery Sunday, the same day the basketball season began.
The Tiger Cubs were scheduled to face the National University Nazareth School Bullpups in one of the featured matches at the FilOil EcoOil Center in San Juan City.
“It was a successful removal of the tumor. We got a word on it while playing today,” said team manager Tina Maralit.
“The doctors said they are confident it would be a speedy recovery given he’s still young and physically fit as an athlete.”
She said Loreto experienced severe headaches and vomiting, prompting him to get checked at the hospital. The tumor was reportedly found to be smaller than a grape.
Manu Inigo, UST head coach, was quoted as saying, “We are dedicating this season to Alfred. We’re playing for him, especially during this difficult time. His injury is a big loss for us, especially since he was stepping in for Koji (Buenaflor) and Racine (Kane). This will inspire us.”
