Philippine Tennis Academy (PTA) standout Tennielle Madis opened her campaign at the ITF J200 Kuala Lumpur tournament with a dominant performance, dispatching Malaysian wild card Dhevieena Sarawanan, 6-0, 6-2, in their first-round clash on Tuesday at the National Tennis Center.
The 17-year-old from M’lang, North Cotabato now sets her sights on a tougher second-round matchup against fourth-seeded Australian Renee Alame, who received a first-round bye. Top-seeded Reina Goto and second-seeded Kanon Sawahiro of Japan, along with third seed Yuyao Li of China, also advanced directly to the next round.
Currently ranked No. 213 in the ITF Juniors singles standings, Madis continues to pursue valuable ranking points as she prepares for her next tournament—the J300 Nonthaburi Closed Regional Championships in Thailand, set for April 28 to May 3.
“She needs to play in more international events and earn strong results to climb higher in the rankings,” said former Davis Cup player and Southeast Asian Games medalist Robert Angelo, who now serves as head coach of the PTA.
Under Angelo’s mentorship and the support of PTA founder Romy Chan, Madis has enjoyed recent success, including two doubles titles in the United Arab Emirates earlier this year.
In 2023, she captured five doubles crowns, four of them alongside PTA teammate Stefi Marithe Aludo in J60 tournaments held in Manila, China, Thailand, and Sri Lanka.
