In the heart of the Philippines’ sugarcane country, a legendary spirit was born — one that would grow from a modest distillery into a global powerhouse. As Tanduay celebrates its eighth consecutive year as the World’s Number 1 Rum and Rum Brand Champion 2024, its remarkable story continues to inspire national pride and international acclaim.
“Our history is our foundation. Every bottle of Tanduay carries with it a legacy of craftsmanship passed down through generations,” said Kyle Tan, Chief Operating Officer of Tanduay. “While we push forward with innovation and global expansion, our values remain deeply rooted in tradition.”

A legacy distilled in time
Tanduay’s journey began in the Spanish colonial era, when it was first known as Ron de Destilerías en Hagonoy y Tanduay. What started as a small distillery in Hagonoy, Bulacan — the Destilería de Hagonoy owned by Elías Menchacatorre — would soon evolve into something far greater. Menchacatorre eventually sold the distillery to spirit master Valentin Teus, who merged it with Destilería de Ynchausti y Compañía, the real birthplace of the Tanduay legacy.
Established in 1854, Ynchausti y Compañía wasn’t just in the liquor business — they were industry titans involved in shipping, abaca production, construction, and banking. But it was their distillery at Isla de Tanduay in old Manila that would go down in history. By 1862, this riverside complex became one of the largest distilleries in the Far East, with towering furnaces and sprawling warehouses along the Pasig River — a symbol of industrial ambition and Filipino ingenuity.

The science and soul of Filipino rum
In the post-war era, Tanduay ushered in a new age of excellence with Faustino J. Munarriz, a chemical engineer who served as the brand’s longest-tenured master blender. Munarriz brought together time-honored techniques and scientific innovation, preserving the distinct identity of Tanduay while enhancing quality. Under his leadership, iconic products like the Tanduay Rhum Dark Five Years and the ESQ line came to life.
“Our master blenders are more than just craftsmen — they are guardians of our identity,” Tan emphasized. “Their commitment ensures that every bottle reflects the character and complexity that define Tanduay.”
Today, Tanduay’s lineup has grown to include premium and flavored rums, ready-to-drink cocktails, whiskies, gins, and limited-edition collector’s items — a testament to its evolution without forgetting its roots.

Filipino spirit, global stage
Tanduay has crossed oceans and borders, now available in over 25 countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, South Korea, and Canada. From neighborhood gatherings in Manila to cocktail bars in Manhattan, Tanduay has become a symbol of Filipino excellence worldwide.
“Wherever you are in the world, a bottle of Tanduay represents more than just a drink — it tells the story of Filipino heritage, resilience, and passion,” Tan said.
As the brand eyes new markets and milestones, it remains proudly Filipino at heart. What started as a small distillery more than 160 years ago has become a global icon — a true ambassador of the Philippines in every pour.
From heritage to horizon, Tanduay continues to raise the bar — and the glass — for the Filipino spirit.
